What is Reef Fishing?
Just as the name implies, reef fishing is simply fishing done inside a reef and its channels. It is one of the most popular types of fishing and you are more than likely guaranteed a catch. Before hoping on a boat and experiencing the joy of reef fishing, consider these useful tips.
Find a Reef
Location is the first factor to consider when planning a reef fishing adventure. You can find the reefs either by having a certified guide assist you in locating it, or by using a depth finder or maps that will give you GPS coordinates of many of the major reefs.
Amount of Fish Vary
Similar to any other form of fishing, nothing is 100% constant, so while a particular reef may hold many fish one day, it may not have many another day. The major reefs, however, are more reliable and usually always hold large amounts of fish.
Consider Weather and Tide
You should also keep the weather in mind; mainly the wind and direction and speed of the current and tide. You should be able to keep your boat over the reef, and have it steady enough to fish comfortably so as to be successful.
Use the Right Equipment
Be sure that you are using the right equipment, including a very stout, heavy action fishing rod if you are planning to catch something of decent size. Also, though you can get by with spinning gear, a fee spooling trolling reel is preferred.
Reef fishing is a great experience, especially if you would like to see many different species of fish. There is a huge barrier reef located about six miles south of Key West and Florida Keys, and another reef line less than a mile away from the main reefs.
